40 New Affordable Apartments Underway.
Two years ago, the Mary Lee Foundation purchased two lots at 1340 and 1342 Lamar Square Drive containing 40 year old metal warehouses with the assistance of the Mezzanine Fund and People Trust. With support of the Austin Housing Finance Corporation, Mary Lee Foundation was able to transfer the property to Mary Lee Community for the purpose of replacing the metal warehouses with new efficiency, one-bedroom, and two bedroom apartments at a site we proudly call The Legacy. The Austin Housing Finance Corporation, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, the developers of the BartonPlace Condominiums, the Zilker Neighborhood Association, Frost Bank, and private individuals have contributed to the budget for the construction of not only 40 apartments at The Legacy, but also a maintenance shop that will serve all apartments on Lamar Square Drive.
As is the case with The Willows, all tenants at The Legacy will be supported by an on-site case manager. The Legacy will feature two elevators, accessible washers and dryers on the first floor, roll-in showers for all first floor apartments, and all other accessibility features provided at The Willows. To reduce costs, solar panels will be installed to help generate electricity for the elevators, laundry rooms, and common areas. Habitat for Humanity of Caldwell County has purchased all of the metal warehouses that could be moved to other locations and has re-purposed the remaining metal and wood for its affordable housing programs. The Legacy is expected to be completed and available for leasing by the end of May 2013.
